ORANJESTAD — The MEP parliamentary faction is calling on the government to take a more active leadership role in tourism policy following a parliamentary meeting with the Aruba Tourism Authority (ATA) on visitor growth, overtourism and the transition toward a “High Value, Low Impact” model.

According to MEP, ATA expressed concern about the continued increase in visitor numbers and supports stabilizing tourism volume. However, not all stakeholders in the sector share that approach, with some continuing to pursue further growth.

Faction leader Evelyn Wever-Croes argues that the government should therefore establish a clear direction aimed at balancing economic growth with quality of life, nature and Aruba’s capacity.

MEP also wants the dialogue expanded to include AHATA, ATSA, the aviation and maritime sectors, AAA and APA. The party says Parliament and stakeholders should work together to determine the island’s tourism limits and the measures needed to keep Aruba attractive for both residents and visitors.
