ORANJESTAD — The Department of Public Health (DVG) reports an increase in cases involving fever, respiratory symptoms and flu-like illness in Aruba. Cases of influenza B have also been confirmed.
DVG is urging special caution among vulnerable groups, including adults aged 60 and older, children under five, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses or weakened immune systems. They are advised to wash their hands regularly, avoid close contact with sick people, continue prescribed medication and consider influenza vaccination.
The flu vaccine is available at DVG’s Infectious Diseases Section. For more information, call 522-4200.
Anyone experiencing fever, coughing, a sore throat, body aches, fatigue or other flu symptoms should stay home, limit contact with others and avoid visiting vulnerable people. Proper ventilation, sufficient fluids and rest are also recommended.
Antibiotics do not work against viruses such as influenza and should not be taken without medical advice. Contact your family doctor if symptoms worsen or fever persists. Seek urgent medical assistance in case of breathing difficulties, severe chest pain or pressure, confusion, extreme weakness or rapid deterioration.
DVG stresses that preventing the spread of respiratory illnesses is a shared responsibility: if you are sick, stay home, take care of yourself and protect others.
