ROME — Pope Leo XIV, 71, has been admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for surgery on Tuesday afternoon to remove a small nodule from one of his lungs. Doctors discovered it during a medical check at an early stage.
It is not yet known whether the nodule is malignant. Tests on the tissue will determine whether further treatment is needed. The Vatican expects the pope to remain hospitalized for about a week.
His public engagements have been cancelled through October 20. Officials hope his planned November trip to South America can proceed.
