Aruba’s Olga Buckley among 12 Caribbean literary projects receiving Dutch support
ORANJESTAD — Twelve literary projects in Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao and St. Maarten will receive funding through the Dutch Foundation for Literature’s Caribe Literature Scheme, with a total of €347,063 awarded in the first 2026 funding round.
In Aruba, author and translator Olga Buckley will receive support for a poetry anthology and a three-part book series for young readers dealing with divorce from the perspectives of three different age groups.
Buckley says children affected by divorce often have little control over the situation while facing difficult emotions and questions. She hopes literature can offer recognition and support when that is not always available from adults.
On Bonaire, Zachter dan zout will be translated into Papiamentu and used in a broader reading and cultural program. Curaçao will receive support for the multilingual children’s book The Journey of the Troupial, while St. Maarten’s Epic Center Foundation will translate Ralph Cantave’s Steve Takes a Stand into Papiamentu and Dutch and organize reading and writing workshops.
The scheme, introduced in 2024, aims to strengthen literary creation and access to literature across the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, including Papiamentu-language and children’s literature.
