Dowers: Prevention key in fight against crime

ORANJESTAD – Justice Minister Arthur Dowers says the recent violent crimes in Aruba remain a serious concern, but stressed that authorities continue to respond swiftly by investigating cases and bringing those responsible to justice. Speaking in an interview with Tito Laclé of Noticiacla, Dowers said public safety remains a top government priority. "Our concern is ongoing. These cases have a major impact on society, and the competent authorities respond immediately to investigate and hold those responsible accountable," Dowers said.

The minister added that while investigations are underway, the government must remain cautious in its public comments to avoid interfering with the judicial process.

Addressing the fact that recent violent incidents have occurred in public and tourist areas, Dowers said this is not entirely new. "Sometimes these crimes happen behind closed doors, and sometimes they occur in public places. What we are seeing now is that a group of young people no longer hesitate to use violence and firearms."

According to the minister, law enforcement authorities are aware of the situation and continue taking action against those involved.

Dowers also called on the community to play an active role in preventing crime. "Everyone can contribute. We can provide guidance, care and supervision, but we must also report suspicious situations to the police. We need to prevent crime before it escalates into tragedy."

He said cooperation between residents, police and the government is essential to keeping Aruba safe.
