Arthur Dowers does not rule out a future bid for Prime Minister

ORANJESTAD – Since Prime Minister Mike Eman announced in June that he will hand over the leadership of the AVP at the party's Leadership Congress in September and step down as Prime Minister on January 1, 2027, speculation has grown over who could become his successor. One of the names frequently mentioned is Minister of Justice Arthur Dowers. In an interview with Noticiacla journalist Tito Laclé, Dowers acknowledged that he is regularly approached about the subject but stressed that he sees no reason to discuss a position that is not yet vacant. "Mr. Mike Eman is the Prime Minister. He will remain Prime Minister until the day he decides he is no longer Prime Minister, or until the people decide that through an election. When that moment comes, we can talk about it” Dowers told Laclé. 

EMAN ANNOUNCEMENT

Eman's announcement marked a significant moment in Aruban politics. After 25 years as leader of the AVP and three terms as Prime Minister, he said he wants to make way for a new generation while completing his current mandate through the end of 2026.

NO CURRENT AMBITION

Asked whether he personally aspires to become Prime Minister, Dowers said he is currently focused on his responsibilities as Minister of Justice. "I have no ambition for a different position than the one I hold today. But if one day a door opens, I will consider the situation” the minister continued. 

EVALUATING EVERY OPPORTUNITY

According to Dowers, throughout his political career he has always evaluated every opportunity based on the circumstances and the arguments presented before making a decision. "Every time I have been approached for a position, I evaluated the situation before deciding. But at this time, it is premature to discuss a position that is not vacant."

FOCUS REMAINS ON CURRENT DUTIES

Dowers acknowledged that the speculation continues but emphasized that his priority remains carrying out his current responsibilities. "I understand that many people are talking about it, but right now that is not the main discussion. Our focus should remain on doing our work as well as possible" Dowers concluded.
