Aruba bans devices that hide license plates from cameras

ORANJESTAD – Aruba has strengthened its traffic regulations by explicitly banning any device, coating or object that makes a vehicle's license plate difficult to read, whether by people or by cameras and other automated systems.

Under the updated rules, it is no longer permitted to place anything on or around a license plate that could obstruct or reduce its visibility or identification. The prohibition also applies to traffic cameras, automatic license plate recognition systems and other technical equipment.

The government deliberately chose broad wording instead of listing specific products, ensuring that any method used to reduce the readability of a license plate falls under the ban.

According to the government, the amendment is intended to guarantee that license plates remain clearly visible and identifiable for both law enforcement officers and modern technological enforcement systems. Violations will be enforced under Aruba's existing traffic laws.
