NEW YORK – New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known worldwide for portraying Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, has died at the age of 78. His death was announced through a statement posted on his official Instagram page.

According to the statement, Neill died unexpectedly while surrounded by his family. No cause of death has been disclosed. The actor revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with cancer but was later declared cancer-free.

"Sam was surrounded by family and passed away with the dignity that characterized his entire life," the statement read. His family has asked for privacy as they cope with their immense loss.

New Zealand entertainment journalist Kate Rodger, who knew Neill well, said the actor remained active and passionate about his work until the very end.
