U.S. steps up strikes on Iran as tensions continue to rise

WASHINGTON / TEHRAN – The United States has launched a new wave of airstrikes against targets in Iran, while President Donald Trump warned that even stronger action could follow if tensions continue to escalate.

According to the U.S. military, the operations are intended to safeguard freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz following recent attacks on commercial shipping and civilian crews that Washington blames on Iran.

Iranian state media reported explosions in the coastal cities of Konarak, Chabahar and Bandar Abbas, as well as in Bushehr Province. Power outages were also reported in parts of the affected areas.

Iran announced it would retaliate by targeting U.S. military bases in the region.

Speaking during the NATO summit, Trump reiterated that he is dissatisfied with Iran's actions and warned that the country would face severe consequences if hostilities continue. Earlier, he also said the ceasefire with Iran appears to be over.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said he spoke with his Qatari counterpart, with both officials stressing the importance of diplomacy to prevent further escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
