WILLEMSTAD — Curaçao celebrated Curaçao Day and its 16th anniversary as an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands on Saturday, October 10. Aruba’s Prime Minister, Mike Eman, attended a solemn session of Curaçao’s Parliament that morning.

Eman was present alongside Curaçao’s Prime Minister, Gilmar “Pik” Pisas, Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, and Suriname’s Vice President, Gregory Rusland.

The historic date 10-10-10 marks the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles. On October 10, 2010, Curaçao and Sint Maarten became autonomous countries within the Kingdom, while Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba became part of the Netherlands as public bodies. Since that change, the Kingdom has comprised four countries: the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. Announcement 10-10-10

For Curaçao, the change meant obtaining its own country status, with autonomy over its internal affairs. It did not become an independent state and remained part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
