ORANJESTAD — US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has denied that Washington asked the Netherlands or other countries to prevent Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado from returning home.

On September 22, Machado attempted to travel through Aruba or Curaçao before continuing to Venezuela by boat, but her aircraft was denied landing permission. It remains unclear who ordered the refusal.

Curaçao's aviation authority says the instruction came from higher authorities. The Dutch government has declined to clarify its involvement, with Prime Minister Rob Jetten citing concerns about cooperation with Venezuela's opposition.

Machado hopes to return to participate in future presidential elections.
