ORANJESTAD — Tropical Storm Isaias has strengthened into the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, with sustained winds of 120 km/h.

According to the National Hurricane Center, landfall is expected late Friday or early Saturday. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida face threats of heavy rainfall, flooding and potentially life-threatening storm surges.

Authorities warn residents to prepare for possible evacuations and prolonged power outages. Isaias developed during an unusually quiet hurricane season influenced by a strong El Niño.
