UNITED STATES — American television evangelist Jim Bakker has died at the age of 86. His wife, Lori Bakker, announced his death on Facebook. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Bakker became widely known in the 1970s and 1980s alongside his former wife Tammy Faye, particularly through the Christian television program The PTL Club. At its peak, the show generated more than $128 million annually and reached millions of viewers.
His career was also marked by major scandals. In 1989, Bakker was convicted of fraud and conspiracy and initially sentenced to 45 years in prison. His sentence was later reduced, and he was released on parole in 1994.
Bakker returned to television in 2003 with The Jim Bakker Show. In 2020, he again faced controversy after promoting silver supplements as a treatment for COVID-19, prompting U.S. authorities to order him to stop making false medical claims.
