ORANJESTAD — The industrial action planned for Thursday at Arubus has been cancelled after SEPPA and the Government concluded their discussions on Wednesday evening with commitments concerning the company’s finances and a new collective labour agreement (CLA). SEPPA Secretary-General Magaly Brito informed Noticiacla of the positive, last-minute development following the industrial action of recent days.

According to Brito, the Government has arranged for CPF revenue — the fee charged for each passenger entering Aruba by cruise ship — to be allocated back to Arubus effective October 1, 2026. This revenue was taken away from Arutram in 2020. Under the new arrangement, SEPPA says Arubus will no longer carry Arutram’s heavy financial burden and will have more room to negotiate.

Brito said the Government asked Arubus on Tuesday afternoon to resubmit its calculations. Based on those figures, the Government committed to increasing the subsidy or funding for Arubus effective January 1, 2027, to make a new CLA possible from the same date. The subsidy still needs to be arranged through Parliament.

SEPPA and Arubus will meet on Tuesday, October 6, to finalise the CLA. For the current year, 2026, employees will receive a one-off payment, or lump sum, as in previous years. Arubus has proposed making this payment on December 8, 2026.

Regarding the outstanding tax debt, Brito said the Minister of Finance instructed the Tax Department on Tuesday to begin the process of resolving the matter. According to the union leader, Arubus also confirmed this. The process opens the way to addressing the debt; its cancellation still needs to be finalised.

SEPPA considers the commitments a result of the efforts of employees who stood their ground during the dispute. “Without struggle, there is no achievement,” Brito said. Arubus employees began industrial action on Monday over the issues mentioned. With no initial progress, the decision was taken to escalate the action on Thursday. That action has now been cancelled.
