WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has announced a voluntary agreement with technology industry leaders to establish safety controls for artificial intelligence. The Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities was presented following a White House luncheon.

Trump described the commitment as morally binding, emphasising corporate self-policing. According to The Guardian’s report, the document contains no enforcement mechanisms or legally binding obligations.

The agreement outlines four levels of oversight: internal monitoring during system training, an internal team checking that monitoring, external auditing and an independent board reviewing the reports. However, it does not require government regulatory oversight or publication of the findings.

Trump also signed an executive order directing federal departments and agencies to use “superintelligence” and “SI” instead of “artificial intelligence” and “AI” in the official communications and documents covered by the order.

The initiative comes amid growing concerns about AI safety. Trump continues to favour industry self-regulation, arguing that stricter rules could undermine economic growth and competition with China.
