ORANJESTAD — Horacio Oduber Hospital (HOH) is expanding its professional education program for healthcare staff. Since June 2026, 37 employees have started various study and specialization tracks coordinated by HOH Academy in cooperation with local and Dutch institutions.

A significant part of the expansion focuses on acute care. In September 2025, HOH Academy began offering specialist nurse training in Intensive Care and Emergency Care in Aruba. This year, the Basis Acute Zorg (BAZ) program was added for the first time, in cooperation with the University of Aruba and Leiden University Medical Center. BAZ provides a foundation for healthcare professionals who want to continue specializing within acute care.

HOH Academy also offers specialized programs in Clinical Neurophysiology, Cytology, the Master Physician Assistant program, Central Sterile Services, Diabetes Nursing, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Dialysis and Cardiac Intervention, in cooperation with several educational institutions and academies in the Netherlands.

The model allows healthcare professionals to continue studying while remaining employed in Aruba. According to HOH, this reduces the need for staff to go abroad for further specialization and helps the hospital build local capacity in medical fields that require advanced technical expertise.

With 37 participants currently enrolled, HOH Academy is continuing to develop its “Continuous Learning” pillar, aimed at strengthening knowledge, specialization and the availability of qualified healthcare professionals in Aruba.
