NEW YORK — Taylor Swift has become the most awarded artist in MTV Video Music Awards history after winning three more trophies this year. The American singer now has 33 VMA awards, surpassing Beyoncé’s previous record of 30.
Swift won the night’s top honor, Video of the Year, for The Fate of Ophelia. She also won Best Direction and became the first recipient of the new Artist-Director award, which recognizes artists who play a major creative role behind the camera.
Swift dedicated her victory to the late country icon Dolly Parton, whom she described as “the ultimate showgirl.”
The biggest winner of the night, however, was Madonna, who collected seven VMA awards, including Artist of the Year, Best Dance and Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter. Madonna now has 27 VMA awards in total.
K-pop group BTS also had a successful night. Their song Swim won two awards, while the group also received the trophy for Best Group.
The MTV VMA’s were first held in 1984 and have since developed into one of the major international award events in pop music.
