DVG urges high-risk groups to get annual flu vaccination

ORANJESTAD — Aruba’s Department of Public Health (DVG) is reminding the community that influenza is not always a simple flu and can lead to serious complications, hospitalization and, in some cases, death.

The risk is higher among people aged 60 and older, those with certain medical conditions or weakened immune systems, some pregnant women with medical indication and people who are bedridden.

DVG recommends that people in high-risk groups receive the influenza vaccine every year because flu viruses change regularly and vaccine protection decreases over time. Vaccination does not provide complete protection, but it can lower the risk of serious complications and usually makes the illness less severe.

People aged 60 and older can receive the vaccine free of charge by presenting their AZV card. Those under 60 who belong to a risk group must present their AZV card and a prescription from their family doctor or specialist.

The vaccine can also be purchased for Afl. 20 between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. DVG recommends vaccination before or at the beginning of the flu season, which usually starts around October.
