Netflix puts Aruba back in spotlight with Holloway case

ORANJESTAD — The disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba will receive renewed international attention through an upcoming three-part Netflix documentary series. For the first time, her mother, Beth Holloway, will tell the full story from her perspective, once again placing Aruba at the center of one of the world’s best-known missing-person cases associated with the island.

Holloway, an 18-year-old Alabama student, disappeared during a graduation trip to Aruba in May 2005. She failed to board her flight home, triggering an extensive island-wide search and an international media storm that linked Aruba’s name to the case for years.

The currently untitled series is directed by Dani Sloane and Matthew Galkin and will revisit the case through the experiences of those closest to Holloway.

According to Netflix, the documentary will reveal forgotten moments, previously unreported elements, interviews with investigators and footage never shown publicly.

It will also address the confession made by Joran van der Sloot in 2023 in connection with a criminal case in the United States. Van der Sloot was long considered the main suspect in Holloway’s disappearance, although he was not convicted of her murder in Aruba.

For Aruba, the documentary may generate another wave of international attention and renew debate surrounding the investigation, the island-wide search and the way the international media portrayed the island following Holloway’s disappearance.
