Coast Guard evacuates ill crew member from cargo ship

ORANJESTAD — The Coast Guard carried out a medical evacuation from a cargo ship on Saturday, September 19, after a 56-year-old Filipino crew member became unable to walk and required urgent treatment.
The Maritime Operations Center received the request for assistance while the vessel was sailing within its rescue area of responsibility. Because no doctor was aboard, the center consulted a CITRO physician in Curaçao, who determined that the patient needed treatment as soon as possible.
A Coast Guard helicopter transported the crew member to Queen Beatrix International Airport, where an ambulance team was waiting to take him to the hospital.
