LIMA - Joran van der Sloot, who is serving prison sentences in Peru for murder and drug trafficking, has requested a transfer to another prison, saying fellow inmates are threatening to kill him.

According to Peruvian media, Van der Sloot wrote that he is subjected to “psychological torture almost daily” and that threats against him and his family are affecting his mental health.

He is serving 28 years for the murder of Stephany Flores and another 18 years for drug trafficking. He is currently held at Challapalca prison, located at an altitude of about 4,600 meters and known for its harsh conditions and isolation.

Van der Sloot was found seriously injured in his cell last December. Peruvian media reported at the time that he had attempted to take his own life.

He says prison authorities have already approved the proposed transfer, but a judge must still authorize it.

Van der Sloot also received a 20-year prison sentence in the United States. In 2023, he admitted killing Natalee Holloway, although he was not convicted of her murder. His confession came as part of a plea agreement in an extortion case involving Holloway’s family.
