WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s electricity supply remains under pressure, according to utility company Aqualectra, after four power-generating units were taken out of service due to technical failures.

During the hottest period of the year, electricity demand on Curaçao can reach 140 megawatts (MW) per day. While total generating capacity normally reaches 150 MW, the four unavailable units have reduced current capacity to only 100 MW.

This leaves Curaçao heavily dependent on wind power. The island has 70 MW of installed wind capacity, but output can fluctuate sharply and at times drop below 10 MW. A 25 MW battery system can temporarily compensate, but its stored energy eventually runs out.

That happened last Saturday when winds weakened faster than expected. The batteries were depleted earlier than projected and several neighborhoods in Curaçao began losing electricity at around 2:30 p.m.

Replacement parts for the four generators are expected to arrive in the coming weeks. Until then, Aqualectra says it will continue closely monitoring Curaçao’s electricity supply.
