Zandvoort bids farewell to Formula 1 after six years

ZANDVOORT - After five editions since its return to the Formula 1 calendar, Zandvoort is preparing for its final Dutch Grand Prix in 2026. The circuit returned after decades away, although its planned 2020 comeback was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Since the first race in 2021, Zandvoort became known for its distinctive banked corners, strong public transport strategy and festival-like fan experience, helping set a trend followed by many modern Grands Prix.

Max Verstappen won three consecutive races from 2021 through 2023, followed by Lando Norris in 2024 and Oscar Piastri in 2025.

The event also faced challenges, including flares being thrown onto the track, reports of inappropriate behaviour and declining ticket demand in later years. Organisers announced in late 2024 that the contract would be extended only through 2026, saying they wanted to “stop at the peak”.

The final edition will feature a sprint race, meaning championship points will be available on both Saturday and Sunday.
