BOGOTA - Economic damage from Colombia’s 7.4-magnitude earthquake is expected to exceed €8 billion, according to President Abelardo de la Espriella. The preliminary estimate includes extensive damage to homes, buildings, roads and other infrastructure.
The death toll has reached 294, while the government says 194 people remain missing. The full extent of the disaster is still unclear in Chocó, the impoverished region near the epicentre, where many communities remain difficult to reach.
Nearly 27,000 homes are estimated to have been destroyed, leaving many survivors sleeping outdoors on mattresses and makeshift beds.
Colombian singer Shakira visited Quibdó and damaged schools in the region. She expressed concern that schools could be forgotten once the immediate emergency passes and pledged to help rebuild at least 10 schools.
