Schiphol security staff threaten strike over working conditions

SCHIPHOL – Security staff at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport could go on strike after unions CNV and FNV said talks with the airport and security companies failed to improve working conditions.

The unions say recent changes reducing the number of security contractors from five to three have led to heavier workloads, irregular schedules, shorter breaks and fewer opportunities for leave. They also claim some staff struggle to take basic breaks, including restroom visits.

CNV and FNV are demanding effective breaks, more recovery time between shifts, greater certainty about leave, fair scheduling for part-time employees, more female security staff, a heat protocol and guaranteed relief within 15 minutes for restroom breaks.

The unions will consult members this week on possible collective action, including a strike, while remaining open to renewed negotiations if Schiphol presents a concrete proposal.
