2026 World Cup matches flagged over possible betting irregularities

MADRID/ZURICH – Several matches from the 2026 FIFA World Cup have come under scrutiny following reports of possible match-fixing and suspicious betting activity.

According to RMC Sport, a report by the Council of Europe recorded several alerts involving World Cup matches. Among the incidents cited were more than US$4.5 million wagered on a draw between Spain and Cape Verde before kickoff, the sending off of Themba Zwane during South Africa vs. Mexico, and a lengthy VAR review that overturned a Ferran Torres goal in Spain's match against Saudi Arabia.

FIFA has stressed that it has found no evidence of match-fixing. The governing body said the report merely compiles alerts and recommends strengthening measures to protect the integrity of the competition.

International media also reported that seven "yellow alerts" related to suspicious betting activity were issued during the tournament, although there is no confirmation that additional matches are under formal investigation.

So far, no conclusive evidence has been presented showing that any matches at the 2026 World Cup were manipulated.
