ORANJESTAD — PPA leader Otmar Oduber is criticizing the government's emphasis on increasing incomes while household expenses continue to place considerable pressure on Aruban families. According to Oduber, the problem is not only how much people earn, but how much they must spend to live.

He identified three major contributors to the cost of living: the BBO turnover tax, transportation and housing.

Oduber argues that the BBO tax increases the cost of goods and services, particularly in Aruba's import-dependent economy. He is calling for a review of alternative tax policies that could ease the financial burden on consumers and businesses.

He also noted that some workers spend between Afl. 300 and 450 monthly on transportation. More efficient and affordable public transportation could significantly reduce these expenses. Rising construction, repair and housing maintenance costs are another concern.

"It is not enough for people to earn more if the government does nothing to make their money last longer," Oduber emphasized.

He believes wage measures must be accompanied by structural reforms that permanently reduce living expenses and improve household purchasing power.
