ORANJESTAD — An electrical malfunction at WEB Aruba during routine testing of its high-voltage protection system caused the island-wide power outage on Thursday, November 5.

According to WEB, the malfunction disconnected two transformers linked to the engines at the RECIP IV power plant, resulting in a substantial loss of electricity generation.

The blackout began around 2 p.m. Power restoration started approximately one hour later, with full electricity supply restored after two hours and 23 minutes.

WEB announced that a more detailed investigation will determine the exact cause. Although electricity generation is currently stable, additional monitoring will remain in place.

The utility company apologized for the disruption and thanked its employees and ELMAR's teams for restoring electricity across Aruba.
