VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV has begun a 12-day visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, less than a month after undergoing surgery to remove part of a lung affected by cancer. According to the Vatican, the 71-year-old pontiff has recovered well and requires no further cancer treatment.
The demanding journey includes 12 flights, numerous religious celebrations and 36 speeches. The visit comes as the Catholic Church faces declining membership and growing competition from evangelical Christian movements across South America.
Peru holds particular significance for the American-born pope, formerly Robert Francis Prevost. He spent more than two decades working there as a missionary and bishop, became a Peruvian citizen and considers the country his second homeland.
His itinerary includes Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco and Pucallpa in the Amazon region. In Chiclayo, where he previously served as bishop, more than one million worshippers are expected to attend an outdoor Mass.
The historic visit is also expected to address poverty, social inequality, environmental protection and the Catholic Church's changing role in Latin America.
