ORANJESTAD — Aruba's Public Prosecutor's Office has expressed deep regret over another postponement of the criminal proceedings related to the serious traffic accident on the Renaissance bridge on January 4, 2026. The prosecution issued its response on Thursday, one day after the case was scheduled to be heard.

The Public Prosecutor's Office had hoped and expected that the case against suspect Chania Fernandez Pedra would be examined on its merits, bringing clarity to everyone involved. According to the prosecution, this is not only in the interest of the suspect but also of the victims, their families and the Aruban community.

The suspect, the victims' families and the wider community have now been waiting for ten months for a final resolution of the serious case, which claimed two lives.

Fernandez Pedra, who is being prosecuted for homicide and attempted homicide, once again appeared in court without legal representation. During the hearing, the suspect decided to request the judge's recusal.

The recusal request will be considered by a special judicial panel, known as the wrakingskamer, on Friday.

Pending that decision, the judge provisionally scheduled a new hearing for November 18 at 1:30 p.m.

Fernandez Pedra remains in pretrial detention.
