WILLEMSTAD — Curaçao Governor Mauritsz de Kort has informed the Council of Ministers that he will not sign a decree granting ministers and members of Parliament an additional month's salary, commonly known as a 13th-month bonus.
The government intended to introduce the additional payment through a decree, which requires the governor's signature to take effect.
With De Kort refusing to sign, the government cannot proceed through this route. If it wishes to pursue the proposal, it must introduce a legislative amendment requiring parliamentary approval.
The proposal to award ministers and parliamentarians an additional month's salary has sparked considerable controversy in recent weeks.
