LISBON — Cristiano Ronaldo (41) has announced his retirement from Portugal's national team, ending a remarkable 23-year international career. In an emotional video, the forward said the time had come to "hand back the number 7 shirt."
The announcement follows a dispute with national team coach Jorge Jesus, which led Ronaldo to leave the squad during the previous international break.
With 234 appearances and 146 goals, Ronaldo retires as Portugal's most-capped player and all-time leading scorer. Since making his debut in 2003, he helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and the Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
"It wasn't an easy decision," Ronaldo said, reflecting on his achievements, mistakes and difficult moments throughout his career.
He concluded his farewell by expressing pride in representing his country, describing it as the greatest achievement of his career.
His departure marks the end of one of international football's most distinguished careers.
