VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV announced during Sunday’s Angelus prayer that he will undergo surgery next week to remove a nodule, a small lump in one of his lungs.
According to the Vatican, the nodule was discovered during a routine medical examination, and recovery is expected to take one week. The tissue will be examined after surgery to determine its nature; no cancer diagnosis has been reported.
The 71-year-old pope is scheduled to visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17. The Vatican has not indicated whether the operation will affect those plans.
