Regional course prepares 12 firefighters as duty officers
KRALENDIJK — Twelve firefighters, two from each of the six Caribbean islands within the Kingdom — Aruba, Curaçao, St. Maarten, Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba — are participating in a Duty Officer training program.
The NIPV program combines online sessions with three two-week practical training periods in Bonaire. The course began in July and will conclude in February.
Instructor Jip Nauta said firefighters on the islands achieve impressive results despite limited equipment and capacity. Although the course covers the same material used in the Netherlands, it is adapted to local conditions. Intense heat, difficulties securing water, fewer incidents for gaining practical experience and different alarm and communication systems require greater flexibility.
Nauta praised the participants’ motivation and dedication, noting that their experience and working methods also provide valuable lessons for the instructors.
