EES rollout delayed again as Schiphol faces long border waits
AMSTERDAM — The full introduction of the European Entry/Exit System (EES) has again been delayed in nine Schengen countries, including the Netherlands. Technical problems and lengthy border-control queues are among the main reasons for the postponement.
The previous deadline was September 6, 2026, but countries including the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Greece, Malta, Portugal and Switzerland have been given more flexibility to phase in full biometric checks.
EES is designed to digitalize border controls for non-EU passport holders visiting the Schengen Area for short stays. The system records biometric data, but implementation has progressed more slowly than planned because of technical challenges, ICT issues and system disruptions.
Schiphol says the effects are already noticeable. At peak times, travelers with non-EU passports are facing longer-than-desired waiting times at border control.
The airport welcomes the possibility of a more gradual rollout over the coming months and says it wants to prevent EES-related delays from becoming visitors’ first impression of the Netherlands.
