Man arrested in Aruba over suspected human smuggling case involving death
ORANJESTAD — Aruba Police’s Human Trafficking and Human Smuggling Unit (UMM) has arrested a 51-year-old Venezuelan man in connection with a suspected human smuggling operation from Venezuela to Aruba.
According to police, the suspect is believed to have been involved in transporting people by boat during the night of September 4 to 5. On September 7, the remains of one of the people believed to have been on board were found near Boca Tabla/Bachelor’s Beach, behind Anker in San Nicolas.
During a judicial search of the suspect’s residence on Kuiperistraat, UMM worked together with the Narcotics Unit, Flex Team, uniformed police and RRT. Five other Venezuelan nationals were found in the apartment and taken in for questioning.
Police noted that human smuggling resulting in death can carry a maximum prison sentence of 18 years.
The investigation remains active. Police are urging anyone with information to call the anonymous tip line at 11141.
UMM has been part of the Aruba Police Force since 2017 and specializes in combating human trafficking and human smuggling. The unit includes personnel from both Aruba Police and the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.
