Owners have until September 23 to remove abandoned vehicles from public roads

ORANJESTAD — The Government of Aruba, the Aruba Police Force (KPA) and other agencies will launch a coordinated operation to remove abandoned vehicles from public roads and spaces, starting in Oranjestad.

Owners have until September 23 to remove their vehicles voluntarily. From September 24, authorities will begin removing vehicles identified as abandoned. Any costs related to removal and subsequent procedures will be charged to the owner.

Police Chief Ramon Arnhem said several vehicles without license plates, or left parked for long periods, have already been identified. Authorities say abandoned vehicles not only affect the island’s appearance but can also contribute to waste accumulation and less safe and hygienic surroundings.

KPA can investigate vehicle ownership even when a vehicle has no license plate.

The first phase will focus on Oranjestad, particularly the city center and surrounding streets, and will serve as a pilot project. After evaluating the process, the initiative is expected to expand gradually to other areas of Aruba.

Serlimar noted that abandoned vehicles often become collection points for additional waste, which can attract pests and negatively affect neighborhood conditions.

Authorities are urging owners to use the remaining warning period to remove their vehicles and avoid additional costs.
