Maxime Night Club investigated over possible human smuggling

ORANJESTAD — Aruba’s Human Trafficking and Smuggling Unit (UMM) carried out a judicial search on Tuesday, September 15, at Maxime Night Club on Kruisweg in Oranjestad as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into possible human smuggling and illegal employment.

UMM was assisted by the Organized Crime Unit, the Financial Investigation Bureau and forensic police. During the operation, authorities seized administrative records, data-storage devices and an amount of cash.

No arrests were made. Police said investigators are still analyzing the information and material collected during the operation.

Four women were found at the establishment who, according to preliminary information, may have been engaged in prostitution. A female bar worker was also found without the valid permits required to work.

The five women were transported and interviewed by the UMM investigative team. They were not questioned as suspects and were not detained.

The investigation is focusing, among other matters, on possible criminal offenses related to human smuggling and the illegal employment of individuals.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing and that no further details can be released at this stage.
