Ben Saunders, first winner of The Voice of Holland, dies aged 43
ARNHEM — Singer Ben Saunders, best known as the first-ever winner of The Voice of Holland, has died at the age of 43. His family confirmed his death after the body of a man was found yesterday near a recreational lake south of Arnhem.
The cause of death has not been disclosed. Police previously said there were no indications that a crime had been committed.
His brother Dean Saunders reacted emotionally on Instagram, describing Ben as his beloved younger brother and asking that the family's loss be treated with respect.
London-born Saunders rose to national fame in 2011 during the first season of The Voice of Holland. His performance of Kings of Leon's Use Somebody during the blind auditions immediately impressed three coaches. He eventually won the competition and received a record contract.
His biggest hit was Kill For A Broken Heart. Saunders released two albums, You Thought You Knew Me by Now in 2011 and Heart & Soul in 2012.
After his musical success declined, Saunders was involved in several legal incidents. In 2015, he was sentenced to 180 hours of community service for assaulting a traffic controller and was ordered to pay compensation. He also remained associated with the motorcycle club Satudarah, which was later banned.
In 2023, Saunders returned to television as a contestant on Avastars. More recently, he moved to Arnhem, where he had previously opened a tattoo shop and said the city's relaxed atmosphere had made him feel at home.
