Member of Dutch Parliament Heera Dijk honors Curaçao on her first Prinsjesdag

THE HAGUE — Dutch Member of Parliament Heera Dijk of D66 marked her first Prinsjesdag with a special tribute to her Curaçao roots, combining in her outfit the two portfolios she represents in the House of Representatives: Kingdom Relations and Arts and Culture.

Dijk appeared at Prinsjesdag wearing a special design by Curaçaoan artist and designer David Paulus. According to the MP, her outfit was an ode to her origins as a “yu di Kòrsou” — a child of Curaçao — and to “The Blue Wave.”

With this choice, Dijk visibly placed Caribbean identity and culture at the center of one of the most important political days in the Netherlands. Prinsjesdag marks the opening of the parliamentary year and is the moment when the Dutch government presents its plans and budget for the coming period.

On her Instagram account, Dijk described her first Prinsjesdag as a special day that she greatly enjoyed. The MP also dedicated an emotional moment to her late mother.

“I thought about you a lot today, mama. I know you would have been very proud of this. We miss you,” she wrote.

Her father and sister were present to share the important moment. Dijk described their support throughout the day as something “priceless.”

Heera Dijk is a member of the House of Representatives for D66 and focuses on Kingdom Relations, Arts and Culture. Her appearance at Prinsjesdag turned fashion into a political and cultural message: a visible expression of the connection between the Netherlands and the Dutch Caribbean.
