Alzheimer Aruba warns against misdiagnosis
ORANJESTAD — Fundacion Alzheimer Aruba is warning that memory loss, disorientation and hallucinations do not automatically mean a person has Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.
The foundation says conditions such as vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid problems and Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) can cause similar symptoms but may be treatable or partly reversible. A reliable diagnosis is therefore essential.
The warning marks the start of the annual awareness month for neurocognitive disorders, under the theme “A Reliable Diagnosis Is Essential.”
Throughout September, Fundacion Alzheimer Aruba will organize information sessions for families, caregivers and support groups. Teal Ribbon Week will also begin on September 21, World Alzheimer’s Day. NOTE: AI picture
