Tour Operators Uni warns of possible loss of access to Aruba’s Northeast Coast

ORANJESTAD – Tour Operators Uni is raising serious concerns that the dispute over access to Aruba’s natural areas could extend far beyond the closure of the California Lighthouse–Alto Vista route. According to the organization, the court case brought by Aruba Birdlife Conservation against the Country of Aruba and Aruba Conservation Foundation (ACF) could eventually result in motor vehicles being banned from several protected areas along the Northeast Coast.

The case is scheduled to be heard on September 10. Tour Operators Uni says the areas potentially affected include the California dunes and Saliña Tierra del Sol, Tera Cora and the Northeast Coast, as well as Tres Trapi. Popular locations such as Andicuri, Wariruri, Black Stone Beach, Bushiribana and Trinity Natural Bridge fall within these zones.

The operators say their concern is no longer limited to the impact on tourism businesses. They fear fishermen, residents and Aruban families could also lose motorized access to beaches, fishing areas and recreational routes.

According to the statement, Aruba Birdlife Conservation is seeking a penalty of Afl. 750,000 per day if motor vehicles continue entering the protected areas. Tour Operators Uni warns that a broad ban could also have financial consequences for Arikok National Park.

The organization says the issue has now become a matter that could affect the wider Aruban community. A meeting with the Minister of Infrastructure and other stakeholders is scheduled for September 4 in an effort to find a lasting solution.
