Aruba housing demand could take 20 years to clear at current pace
ORANJESTAD – Aruba is facing a major housing backlog and, if the country continues building homes at its traditional pace, it could take around 20 years to meet current demand. This became clear during an interview with Public Works Minister René Herdé by Tito Laclé on Noticiacla LIVE.

According to figures cited during the interview, the Department of Infrastructure and Planning (DIP) has between 8,000 and 10,000 land-related applications, while FCCA has approximately 4,000 cases involving urgent housing needs. Historically, Aruba has managed to produce around 400 homes per year. Herdé clarified that the 20-year estimate does not mean that an individual applicant would necessarily have to wait exactly that long, but that with the current capacity it is impossible to eliminate the backlog quickly. The minister said the government wants to change the system, including through larger housing projects and alternative solutions for people who are unable to finance a home through the traditional model.
