Prosecutors in Curacao seek 40 months in prison for Jonathan Schoop over illegal firearm

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao prosecutors are seeking 48 months in prison for professional baseball player Jonathan Schoop, with eight months suspended, meaning he would serve 40 months behind bars if the court follows the prosecution’s recommendation.

Schoop is being prosecuted for possession of a heavy firearm and ammunition. The case is part of the Tijger investigation, launched after authorities received information that Schoop and others may have been carrying firearms.

According to prosecutors, a heavy firearm was found in Schoop’s car and his DNA was detected on the weapon. Co-defendant Giviene Basilia claimed the firearm belonged to him, but prosecutors said that statement was not credible.

The prosecution also placed the case in the context of violence between groups on Curaçao and alleged that Schoop has a prominent role within Sta. Maria City, which justice authorities say is in conflict with Buena Vista City. That alleged affiliation has not been established by a court.

Prosecutors said a substantial sentence is needed to send a clear message against illegal gun possession on Curaçao. The court will issue its ruling at a later date.
