Government ends fuel subsidy: gasoline rises 25.1 cents, diesel 29.7 cents
ORANJESTAD - Starting August 12, 2026, gasoline in Aruba will rise by 25.1 cents to Afl. 2.909 per liter, while diesel will increase by 29.7 cents to Afl. 2.863 per liter.
The key difference this time is that the government is not absorbing the new increase, as it did during the previous four months. From April 8 through August 11, the AVP-Futuro cabinet allocated Afl. 10 million to partially shield consumers from higher international fuel prices. With that temporary measure ending, local prices are again moving closer to international market levels.
Minister Geoffrey Wever attributes the increase to continuing uncertainty on global oil markets, particularly the conflict between the United States and Iran and the renewed closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Fuel excise duties are returning to 61.4 cents per liter for gasoline and 33.2 cents for diesel. However, the separate 10-cent-per-liter reduction introduced in May 2025 remains in effect.
Instead of continuing to subsidize fuel prices, the government says it is directing support toward lower-income workers and families through increases in social assistance, school allowances and other measures.
