Eman: Mike de Meza to consider whether he still wants to become minister

ORANJESTAD – Mike de Meza will take a few days to consider whether he still wants to accept a ministerial post in the AVP-FUTURO cabinet. Prime Minister Mike Eman confirmed this Tuesday evening, after it became known that the case which had affected De Meza’s appointment process for nearly two years had come to an end.

Eman said he spoke with De Meza shortly after the news and that the parliamentarian was “extremely relieved” by the outcome.

According to the Prime Minister, the period had not been easy for De Meza or his family. He highlighted the pressure the process had placed on them and expressed appreciation for the way De Meza had dealt with the situation.

“It was not easy for Mr. De Meza, and certainly not for his family, when his name was placed in this situation,” Eman said.

With the case now behind him, Eman said, the way is open for De Meza to make his own decision about his political future.

“At this moment, he informed me that he wants to take a few days to think and decide whether he still wants to occupy the post of minister,” the Prime Minister said.

Eman stressed that De Meza should be given the space to consider the decision together with his family, taking into account the difficult period they have gone through.

Mike de Meza had originally been intended to become a minister in the AVP-FUTURO cabinet, but his screening process and the tax-related matter that followed prevented his appointment. According to Eman, if the issue had not arisen, De Meza would likely already have been serving as a minister alongside the other members of the cabinet.

The Prime Minister said the government is relieved that this chapter can now be closed and made clear that, for his part, he would welcome a decision by De Meza to finally accept a ministerial role.

“We have always known Mike as someone who was prepared and who was preparing himself to carry government responsibility,” Eman said.

However, no decision has yet been made.

According to the Prime Minister, talks with De Meza will continue in the coming days while he assesses his situation and decides whether, after everything that has happened, he still wants to join the cabinet.

The case that for a long time determined his political future is now behind him. The main question is now a different one: Does Mike de Meza still want to become minister?
