WILLEMSTAD – Former CITRO volunteer and retired skipper Krik Parrel died Saturday in a boating accident near the entrance to Fuikbaai, Curaçao. He was 83 years old.
According to CITRO, Parrel's fishing boat struck rocks and began to sink. He jumped into the water to try to keep the vessel away from the rocks but became trapped beneath the sinking boat. He disappeared underwater and died.
His wife, who was also on board, was rescued by people aboard another fishing boat and taken to safety.
Divers from Sandals Diving and a CITRO rescue team later recovered Parrel's body. CITRO said the emergency responders involved in the rescue operation received emotional support following the tragic incident.
