FIFA opens disciplinary case against Argentina and several players
ZURICH – FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association and players Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, along with staff member Roberto Ayala, over alleged misconduct during the 2026 World Cup.
The investigation covers alleged unsporting behavior, physical violence, discriminatory chants and gestures, violations of match and security protocols, and other incidents during the tournament.
One of the main incidents occurred after the semifinal against England, when Argentine players displayed a banner claiming the Falkland Islands belong to Argentina, prompting the United Kingdom to request an investigation.
Following the World Cup final, won by Spain, Paredes was involved in a confrontation with Spain's Eric Garcia and Gavi. FIFA will now decide whether disciplinary sanctions are warranted.
