New campaign promotes responsible pet ownership

ORANJESTAD – The Government of Aruba is preparing to introduce a new policy aimed at improving animal welfare and reducing the number of stray dogs and cats across the island.

Every day, abandoned dogs and cats can be seen searching for food, water and shelter. Many face hunger, disease, traffic accidents and abuse. The situation affects not only the welfare of animals, but also public safety, public health and the overall quality of life in the community.

According to the government, the problem is largely the result of pet abandonment, uncontrolled breeding and irresponsible pet ownership.

For that reason, the Ministry of Health, Elderly Care and Addiction Services, together with the Department of Public Health (DVG), is finalising a new policy focused on promoting responsible pet ownership, preventing abandonment and improving the management of stray animals in accordance with existing legislation.

Over the coming weeks, the public will receive more information about the new measures and what it truly means to be a responsible pet owner.

Through the campaign "No More Suffering, More Responsible Pet Owners," the government is encouraging every resident to become part of the solution, stressing that lasting change depends not only on legislation but also on the commitment of every pet owner.
