Customs: Census registration not required immediately for household goods exemption

ORANJESTAD – Aruba Customs has clarified that people do not lose their eligibility for a household goods import exemption simply because they have not yet completed their registration with the Civil Registry (Census). To prevent delays and unnecessary costs during relocation, Customs applies a temporary import procedure while the registration process is being completed.

The procedure varies depending on whether the applicant is a Dutch national relocating for work, an Aruban returning from abroad, or a foreign worker with a valid work permit. Once Census registration is completed and all legal requirements are met, the temporary import will be converted into a permanent duty-free household goods import. Foreign workers who were required to provide a security deposit will receive it back.

Customs added that licensed customs brokers are familiar with the procedure and can help clients avoid unnecessary charges, such as container demurrage. For additional information, residents are encouraged to contact a customs broker or Aruba Customs directly.
